Tooth Gem FAQs
How long do tooth gems last?
Tooth gems will last anywhere from two months to two years, we can not give a more specific time frame as everybody's lifestyle, oral health and food habits are so different.
Our expertise and sound-proof application techniques mean you get the best foundation for long lasting gems. *Generally* our tooth gems last between one to two years.
How are Tooth Gems applied?
Tooth gems & gold charms are applied with a non-allergenic, high quality dental bond - the same adhesive that orthodontists use to apply braces.
There is absolutely no drilling, damage or pain to be concerned about!
Pre-care
Eat and brush your teeth before your appointment - no at home whitening products (not including whitening tooth paste) for two weeks prior to application
Aftercare
✧ Don’t touch or play with your gem
✧ No eating for one hour after application
✧ Stick to soft foods for 24 hours
✧ No alcohol, soft drink, fruit juice or acidic drinks for 24 hours after application
✧ Do not brush the tooth with the gem on it for 24 hours after application when using a normal toothbrush. Avoid the tooth for 48 hours with an electric tooth brush.
✧ Avoid mouth wash for 24 hours
✧ Do not smoke or vape for 24 hours after application
How are gems removed?
Tooth gems and charms can ONLY BE REMOVED BY A DENTIST.
It is illegal for a tooth gem artist to perform a removal in Australia. Please do not attempt to remove your own gems as you could damage your teeth doing so.
Eventually your gems will come off naturally.
Will tooth gems damage your teeth?
Tooth gems will not damage your teeth if applied by an experienced professional. It is important to research your artist, tooth gems are a technical service and your teeth are not something to be complacent with.
How long do applications take?
Smaller designs are completed anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes and larger designs can take up to an hour and a half.
Are tooth gems for everyone?
You must be 16+ or under 16 with a parent present.
Tooth gems can not be applied to veneers, composite bonding or false teeth, tooth gems can only be applied to natural teeth with healthy enamel. Tooth gems can not be applied to fillings.
Tooth gems are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women
What crystals do you use?
Platinum Gem Artistry stocks an extensive range of gems, we predominately stock Preciosa gems in our standard gem sizes.
Preciosa are the best crystals on the market. We do also stock Swarovski in some varieties however despite how well Swarovski is marketed, Preciosa are a higher quality crystal and our first preference for our clients.
We have done a lot of product comparisons and testing over the years to ensure you are always getting the best quality for lasting gems.
What if I don't have straight teeth
Tooth gems can suit anyone & will actually serve as a distraction from teeth related concerns you may be self conscious about. We often get feedback from our gem clients saying their gems and whitening have made them more confident in their smile!
We also take into account any smile concerns you may have and can sometimes place gems in a way that will make your teeth appear straighter
Will I be able to feel it?
You will be able to feel your gem for around 48 hours after application and then you will get used to it. You wont be in any pain during the application process.
Naturally your tongue will want to touch and play with your gem, the tongue is made up of very strong muscles so it’s important to be conscious of this and avoid making a habit of touching your gem with your tongue to ensure it’s longevity.
Should I get my teeth whitened if I'm getting gems?
Its definitely not a prerequisite to whiten before gems however a lot of gem clients like to whiten as more people notice their teeth when they have gems on.
If you do want to whiten we recommend whitening before your gems. If you wish to whiten after tooth gem application thats fine, you will just need to wait a week between appointments.
Can I get a gem if I have braces?
Yes you can, if your teeth are sizable enough we can usually fit a small design in
What if I lose a gem?
We offer 6 week guarantee on our gems, if you lose a gem in this time we will replace your gem free of charge - note: this is a very rare occurrence as our application methods are strong and thorough.
Our guarantee period is a cut above the rest, a lot of artists don’t offer a guarantee period at all & if they do it’s usually for 3-4 weeks.
If you lose a gem after the 6 week guarantee period you can book our gem replacement service.
Note: We do not offer guarantees on tooth gems placed on teeth we have not recommended. For example, we do not guarantee 4 piece crystal butterflies if they are placed on the canine due to how curved a canine is. Butterfly wings rarely sit flat on a canine which can effect its longevity. We would however guarantee the same style of butterfly if it was placed on the incisor and front tooth or the lower teeth as those teeth are generally flat
We will consult with you and make recommendations for your teeth specifically.
I want tooth gems but I’m not 100% sure where I want them placed
Don’t stress it! We will do a full consultation on the day of your application, we will go through our range with you & can help you decide where is best to place your gems
Please remember not all designs can be done on every tooth, some designs, charms and gems can only be applied to flat teeth

What if I wear a retainer
If you have a wire retainer behind your teeth that’s no problem at all
If you wear a metal retainer that fits over the front of your teeth bring it to your appointment and we can place your gems around it
If you wear a plastic retainer you may have to get a new one made that fits over your tooth gems
We are also able to bling out your plastic retainers! Tooth Gem's are not recommended while you are doing Invisalign.
